LABELLING

Note there are two labelling requirements - for Transport and for Supply.

Transport labelling should conform to SABS 0228/9

Guidelines for supply labelling are given in SABS 0265 (CHIP3)

TRANSPORT LABELLING

SIZES OF CLASS AND SUBSIDIARY RISK LABELS FOR TRANSPORT.

More than 0,5 but less than 5,0 20 x 20mm
More than 5,0 but less than 20,0 30 x 30mm

SUPPLY LABELS.

Any symbol required to be shown shall be printed on an orange-yellow background and its size (including the orange-yellow background) shall be at least equal to an area of one-tenth of that of a label which complies and shall not in any case be less than 100 square millimetres.

lf the package is an awkward shape or so small that it is unsuitable to attach a label complying with the above, the label shall be attached in some other appropriate manner

Label requirements are to be found in the Database. Note that the label on the container should carry no more than 4 RISK & SAFETY PHRASES. These should be chosen so as to avoid repetition of hazards and risk warnings that could be implied in the choices.

MARINE POLLUTANTS (identified with "P") and severe marine pollutants (identified with "PP") must be appropriately marked.

Labelling of marine pollutants

If the commodity is a MARINE POLLUTANT and destined for sea freight, outer packaging must display the special triangular black and white label, adjacent to the other labelling which is required.

ExemptIons

The marine pollutant mark is not needed where:

a solution contains less than 10% (by mass) of a marine pollutant or less than I% of a severe marine pollutant

inner packs containing a marine pollutant do not exceed a capacity of 5 litres (liquid) or 5 kg (solid)

inner packs containing a severe marine pollutant do not exceed a capacity of 0,5 litres (liquid) or 0,5 kg (solid).

Do not confuse the marine pollutant label (transport)
with the environmental hazard (Supply)
